Review: Confessions of a Texan in Tokyo - Grace Buchele Mineta
17:40
I have a habit of finding myself in YouTube holes in the middle of the night unsure about how I got there. Quite often or not they revolve about food or Japan or both. It was during one of these nights a few month ago that I stumbled across Grace Buchele Mineta's YouTube channel, Texan in Tokyo. Grace, originally from Texas, lives with her husband Ryosuke and records her life in Japan in blogs, vlogs and comics. She's written two books, My Japanese Husband Thinks I'm Crazy and My Japanese Husband (Still) Thinks I'm Crazy and her third book Confessions of a Texan in Toyko came out today.
The book is made up of short, snappy and pretty funny one page comics interspersed with short essays on life in Japan. Interesting and easy to read I devoured it in one evening before going on to read the previous two books..
Reading them in such quick succession did mean the small amount of crossover in some of them was quite noticeable but for the most part the books contain a lot of new material that hasn't featured before on Grace's blog.
Ryosuke even got in on the act in this book and branched out from his usual forward writing duties with two comics he drew himself. What they lacked in drawing skill, they made up for with funniness. They were up there in my top 5 favourite comics from the book but the best has to be the one about the 'polite Japanese way' to deal with neighbours underwear blowing off their washing line on to your balcony.
My favourite parts though were the Useless Japanese Words for People sections. Trust me, you need to read this book to find out what a bacodo atama is, it's genius.
