BAMB: Desert Island Reads
13:47This week saw the launch of this year's Books are My Bag campaign and its bigger and better than ever. This time round the theme is desert island books and I've been asked to name my 8 books I'd take if I was stranded on a desert island. Now I'm taking it as a Shipwrecked type situation (man I miss that show) where channel 4 would swoop in a save me if I was actually about to die otherwise my list would be looking like this:
- Boatbuilding Manual
- SAS Survival Guide: How to survive in the Wild, on Land or Sea
- The Wilderness Survival Guide: The Practical Skills You Need for the Great Outdoors
- Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties: A Guide to Building Shelters in the Wilderness
- Wild Food: A Complete Guide for Foragers
- How to Survive on a Desert Island (Tough Guides)
- Pocket First Aid and Wilderness Medicine
- Ultimate Navigation Manual
I'm also going by Desert Island Disks rules and I've already got a Bible and the Complete Works of Shakespeare.
I read this recently and love it. I've not seen the film yet but definitely will. I'm hoping it will serve as inspiration survive and a reminder that things could be worse. I could be stranded on Mars.
2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling
2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling
My favourite Harry Potter book (and favourite film but for different reasons. Why did they leave so much important plot out???), despite what happens in the book, harry potter would leave me with a squishy homely feeling.
3. Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy
3. Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy
Ahhh Anna, my old nemesis, I started this book three years ago now and still haven't finished. It was in my video from the start of the year of half read books I'd like to finish and I restarted it a few weeks ago but some time alone on a desert island with this chunky bad boy is probably what I need to finish it.
4. The Life of Pi- Yann Martel
4. The Life of Pi- Yann Martel
Again I've chosen a book where someone is fighting against the odds to survive. I think I'd need the constant reminders not to just curl up and die.
5. The Last of the Haussmans - Stephen Beresford
5. The Last of the Haussmans - Stephen Beresford
I couldn't not have a play so I chose Haussmans, mainly for sentimental reasons but also because I love it. It will remind me of my friends and the joys of Helen McCrory and Rory Kinnear as well as giving me something to have a good old laugh at. I'm sure with this text I could put on a one woman production of it and waste a good amount of time.
6. The Selected Works of T.S.Spivet - Reif Larsen
6. The Selected Works of T.S.Spivet - Reif Larsen
This book has been on my shelf since the bookshop crawl 2014 and it's about time I read it. The reason I haven't yet is that it's not one I can just fling in my handbag to read on the bus. That won't be a problem on the island. I'll have all the time in the world to read all the footnotes and diagrams as well as the novel itself.
7. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
I just really like this book. That's all.
8. The Past, The Future and The Loud Loud Girl - Karen McCombie
The Ally's World books were my jam between the ages of about 10-14. They're easy to read and a bit silly but I loved them and when you're stuck on a desert island and everything sucks you need an easy read.
Which 8 books would you take?

Books are my bag is a campaign to promote books and bookshops. It runs from 8th October until Christmas and simply wants you to visit your local bookshop. The people at BAMB sent me a box of desert island book treats. Check the video out below to see me unbox them.
